Finished the big Hollywood/L.A. painting... pretty trippy...
Also finally finished this crazy looking Alien/Spirit painting...
gonna have to wait to put the pictures up til' Google isn't stoned anymore...
Was kinda hoping Coachella would broadcast this week as well... now I'm thinking it was a lure... cool of them to broadcast the first weekend regardless...
Played some UV songs yesterday...sounding good... was reading about mastering and got these notes:
Compressing:
-stick around RMS levels of -10db, tiny bit of destructive eq, tiny bit of widening,
-listen on cans and monitors while A/B-ing it with similar CDs in your collection
-Limiting is really just more compression-starts up at 10:1
-release time range of 84-105 ms.
=longer release usually means that you’ll hear the compressor
-3:1 ratio keeps the compression clean
Basically, it goes as follows:
Compressors are like little picture frames for music...they bring out the cool parts but if the frames all jaggedish, than the whole thing is weird...
Mixing Down:
mix around the drums
I used to wonder why all these people recorded Drums first...I think most idiots who record themselves still mix up tracking and mastering...Personally, I think the drums follow the Guitars...so I always like to record guitars first...then again, not everyone has good enough rhythm so its understandable...
I realized that I'm recording with a program that is one of the most difficult to produce good sounding songs with and I'm actually relieved since my mixdowns sound pretty good... Minimal Money... but, what I'm really happy about is that I'm mastering with one of the good mastering programs...that came in the bundle for way cheaper than it sells... Blessing in disguise
Restrung my little custom sounding Acoustic...I keep this one in what I call the Ultraviolet Tuning...which is slightly sample-able on my YouTube demo page in the demo with a rough, funny sounding "UV" or "Divine" as it is called on the album... one of my best tuning inventions to date...
Its a cool guitar..I smashed the bottom on concrete and densed the sound up with epoxy and gorilla glue...then I solidified the wood so it can barely breath...Why? Because with the density of the wood changed and the way I string this particular guitar..there is a sort of Jazzish/Country depth that is truly unique in terms of sound... It also glows in the dark... Not a bad modification for a beginner...
I also have been working on three other custom projects: My old Amp, this old junky Les Paul from the 50s, and a custom Talkbox...
For the Les Paul, I've already changed the pots and pickups and mixed the sound up by using Fender AND Les Paul pots...I used my old Les Paul-which-I-sold's pickup that I'd replaced... I rewired all the pickups to one switch on top and one on the bottom...
My old amp needs a new speaker...but I've been thinking about putting in some kind of subwoofer or a bass amp speaker instead...Its crazy sounding regardless
There is also this 12-string I'm building, but I won't work on it til' I can afford the parts I need...
The talkbox, is interesting though..I am wondering if I can make a little triplet talkbox...using three horns in a largish pedal environment....gonna test it out in a few weeks and see if they all work or which one sounds best...
Ah, the things people do without money...
